Trump says 25% Tariff on Canada
But Not On Oil
While taking questions from the press after signing two new executive orders Trump said there will be a 25% tariff on both Canada and Mexico and noted they could go up in time.
When asked if oil was part of the applied tariff the President said that it would not affect oil as far as he was concerned.
Again he cited the concern over illegal immigrants entering the USA, the drugs coming into his country and the trade surplus Canada enjoys with the USA.
It is possible that Premier Smith's approach of demonstrating a desire to deal with border issues rather than threatening retaliation may have spared her province.
Given the posture of our current PM with regard to the west in general and Alberta in particular it wouldn't be out of character if he tried to have Alberta withhold oil from the USA.
